The Next Right Thing by Emily p. Freeman

When we have a decision to make, what we want more than anything is peace, clarity, and a nudge in the right direction. If you have trouble making decisions because of either chronic hesitation or decision fatigue, Emily P. Freeman offers a fresh way of practicing familiar but often forgotten advice: simply do the next right thing. This simple, soulful practice will help you

  • clear that decision-making chaos
  • quiet the fear of choosing wrong
  • find the courage to finally decide without regret or second-guessing

Whether you’re in the midst of a major life transition or are weary of the low-grade anxiety that daily life can bring, Emily helps create space for your soul to breathe so you can live life with God at a gentle pace and discern your next right thing in love.

This collection of practices from Emily P. Freeman in The Next Right Thing is truly fresh air for the soul. Each chapter, while short, presents Emily’s readers with relate-able memoir, a prayer, and finally a practice to walk in. I both read and listened to this book on audiobook (as I do with most books, reading when I have time to sit and listening in the car where I left off) and the words are so laced with Emily’s voice that I found myself hearing her very audibly in my head in the times that I would sit, hard copy in hand, and find space for my soul in those few minutes. Emily will teach you to ask questions well as you make the decisions that make your life.

The Next Right Thing is a book I find myself returning to again and again to review the practices and implement them in my life as needed. We are always making decisions and Emily’s soulful practices can help clear the clutter that decision making can sometimes bring. My favorite practice can be found in chapter three Name the Narrative.

If you find yourself drawn to reflective reads this book is for you. It can be read quickly, but I recommend taking your time and letting the practices Emily outlines take shape in your life. The chapters are short and can be read much like a “one-a-day” devotional.
